Vale - Lew Smit

The Metcalfe family is saddened by the recent passing of Koojan Hills founder and legend of the cattle industry, Lew Smit.

Lew to us was a mentor and friend and we will always be grateful for the opportunity to continue his passion for breeding cattle.

We have reminisced on recent conversations with Lew and marvelled at his vast knowledge of cattle and the industry as a whole. Lew received many accolades for his service to the Angus breed and most recently he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2013 for service to the livestock industry.

The past week we have found happiness checking calving cows bred by Lew everyday. We know somewhere he’ll be watching over them, smiling with a piece of choccy cake in his hand!
