Our Biggest Mating Program Yet!

Wet and muddy is how we would describe this years mating program! We experienced some terrible weather during some big days in the yards but we pushed through to record our biggest program to date. Staff morale was really put to the test at times as all up 275mm of rain fell over the two months we were synchronising and mating (June and July)!

With cattle prices at an all time high we are very excited to re-invest into our future herd and think we have used a lineup of sires suited to our South Coastal market with an emphasis being put on feet and structure, early growth and maternal traits.

We AI’d 180 ‘R’ heifers at the end of June before re-synchronising them for a second mating day 3 weeks later. 40% of the heifers responded to this second program which we were pleased with. We used some exciting new genetics as well as revisiting some previously used sires including Sitz Stellar 726D who’s calves have impressed us so far.

We then AI’d a further 380 mature cows as well as implanting 74 embryos into recipient cows. Clean up bulls have been out with the cows and are close to being pulled out at the time of this post! Again, we feel we have some extremely exciting new genetics coming for our clients as well as continuing with some bloodlines that worked well for us last year, including Ben Nevis Newsflash N239, Musgrave 316 Stunner as well as home bred bulls who are performing for us like Koojan Hills Nero N286 and Koojan Hills President P231

A big thank you must go to Steve Mountford from Nutrien Breeding Services who does our AI on our big days and also to Richard Hall for his ET expertise! We’re already looking forward to seeing the calves arrive!
